Wedding makeup is an important process that you should not underestimate. By underestimate I mean having your friend do it for you or you do it yourself. No matter how good you are or how helpful your friend is, I highly recommend having a professional makeup artist to do it for you.

Doing this has 2 main advantages. First, your makeup artist is a professional that does weddings all the time and he/she knows how much time is needed. This is essential because you do not want to be running overtime in your makeup process. Your makeup artist is usually the first to arrive at your wedding and being on time (and finishes on time) set the tone for your whole day.

Secondly, you’d want someone to follow you around for some part of the wedding day in case you need to do touch up in various situations. You can’t do this if you are doing this by yourself or have your bridesmaids do it for you. For example, you want your markup artist to be with you when you are doing your bridal portraits. But you and your bridesmaids are going to be in the photos so there is no one going to be able to help in case you need some touch ups.

These are just some examples in my point of view and I know I’m just scratching the surface here. That’s why in this article, I’ve asked my good friend Mimi Kuang to talk about the 5 essential wedding makeup tips for your wedding day.

Just to set the stage, Mimi is a professional wedding makeup artist for almost 10 years. We have worked numerous times together and I recommend all my brides to have Mimi as their makeup artist on the wedding day!

Q: How about you tell us who you are?

A: Sure! I’m Mimi Kuang and I’ve been a professional bridal makeup artist for almost 10 years. As the bride, you’ll need to keep in mind that this is the day you will be photographed the most! From getting ready in the early morning, first look, bridal portraits, walking down the aisle, wedding ceremony, family photos, reception, first dance, cake cuttings, and dance party, sparkles exit etc. There will be thousands of photos taken on your wedding day so make sure you hire a makeup artist that you love!

Q: What are the 5 essential wedding makeup tips you have for the future brides?

A: Here are my 5 tips:

First, it sounds basic but the key to beautiful makeup is beautiful skin! Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. When it’s getting close to your wedding day, do sheet masks as often as you can. A well-hydrated face will make applying makeup much easier and flawless. If you want to get a facial or any laser treatment done, do it 1-2 weeks prior to the wedding day to avoid any reaction or peeling skin on the day of the wedding.

Second, use primers and correctors to improve skin imperfections such as redness, dull skin, large pores, dark circles, and pimples, etc. Do these as the prep to get your face ready for the makeup process.

Third, Even if you want a neutral look for the wedding day, I highly recommend contouring your face. Doing so will bring out your features more beautifully in the photos.

Fourth is Lashes! Every bride needs lashes on their wedding day. It makes such a difference with vs without lashes. For the brides that like natural looks, you can find natural looking lashes as well. Either case, you should definitely have lashes on and this is my honest opinion!

Fifth, Last but not least, waterproof everything and setting sprays. Always set your makeup with setting sprays and waterproof mascara and eyeliner! I’m not gonna lie, wedding day is an emotional day! You laugh so much, but also tear up from touching moments like first looks, exchanging vows, father and daughter / mother and son dances , and guest speeches!

You do not want panda eyes on your wedding day! Even so, things happen sometimes such as your eyelashes came off or your eye makeup smears. Hire a makeup artist that will stay for touch up is highly recommended!

Q: What is you process like on the wedding day?

A: People usually asks me how long does it take to get ready on a wedding day? For the bride, my makeup application takes about 1-1.5 hours. More time is needed if you want me to do your mom’s makeup/hair and/or your bridesmaids makeup/hair. I want to make sure you look flawless from every angle! From skin to contour your features, eye makeup and brows, I take each step carefully so your makeup stay put and you don’t look overdone. I want you to still look like you on the wedding day, but the better version of you haha ~ you will walk down the aisle with confidence and know that this is your day and you should enjoy every moment of it!

I hope you enjoy this wedding makeup tips from Mimi and myself. If you need more information feel free to contact me and I’ll get you in touch with Mimi Kuang.
